An Althusserian approach to education posits that the Scholastic Apparatus exists to replicate the ideologies and norms of the nation-state. Looking to Wolfe (1999, 2006, 2013), we know that the invasion of what is currently called Canada was a structure and not an event; settler colonial policies and practices legitimized and continue to re-legitimize the existence of the nation-state. In other words, education in Canada serves to rationalize (a) the theft of Indigenous lands and (b) the right of settler occupation on Indigenous lands. With governments and educational institutions clambering to show how they are engaging in decolonizing and reconciliatory processes following the TRC's Calls to Action (2015), are either/both remotely possible given the settler colonial structure of Canada? Papers for this co-sponsored panel with the Canadian Sociology Association will seek to interrogate the ways settler colonialism exists always-already and what this means for educational researchers.
