The Canadian Game Studies Association (CGSA/ACÉV) is dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of games, gaming, the games industry, and gaming culture. Its primary goal is to support the work of Canadian researchers, graduate students, artists, game designers, programmers, theorists, and others working in this field. Our annual conference provides an opportunity for scholars, designers, and students to share research and best practices concerning critical game design for digital and analog games, critical game studies, the study of gaming culture and the games industry. Furthering our ongoing commitment to diversity, inclusivity, anti-oppression and decolonization, we are connecting the 2020 Congress theme Bridging Divides: Confronting Colonialism and Anti-Black Racism with the 2021 theme Northern Relations, and we invite submissions from Black and/or Indigenous scholars, and/or submissions addressing colonialism and anti-Black racism in relation to games and gaming culture. Graduate student submissions are strongly encouraged, and bursaries to offset registration costs are available for accepted Black and Indigenous graduate students. CGSA 2021 commits to extensive time and space for critical discussions of race, colonialism, and place in contemporary game studies. 


CGSA 2021 will be offered entirely online, primarily through pre-recorded panel sessions that can be viewed in advance of a live discussion session with all presenters. CGSA welcomes other types of submissions including workshops, demonstrations, fishbowls, etc, especially those that take advantage of the virtual conference format or might be uniquely possible in a virtual conference format. The conference will include ample opportunities for networking and socializing with the CGSA community - and naturally, playing games together!
